Photographers are the part of the industry that never quite made it onto a directory. Everyone knows one, nobody can tell you how they found them, and the good ones are usually booked through a friend of a friend.

That still leaves you needing one in a city you have never worked in. Here is how it actually happens.

The four routes

Other performers. This is the answer nine times out of ten. Ask someone whose photos you like who shot them. Most people will tell you, and the recommendation comes with the useful part attached, which is what they were like to work with.

Their own socials. Photographers who shoot adult work post it. Look at who is tagged in the images you admire, then look at their feed rather than their portfolio. A portfolio is their ten best days. A feed shows you what a normal shoot with them looks like.

Studios. Rental studios in most cities keep a list of photographers who use the space and know the rules. Worth an email even if you are not renting.

Events. Expos are full of them, and half are there specifically to meet performers.

What to check before you book

Look at whether they have shot adult content before. Not nudes, not boudoir, adult content. It is a different pace, a different set of comfort conversations, and someone who has only done fashion will be figuring it out on your time.

Look at how they treat the people in their photos online. Are performers credited? Tagged? Or are the images just posted as the photographer's work with the person in them anonymous? That tells you a lot about the shoot before you get there.

Ask someone who has worked with them. One message, ten seconds, saves entire days.

The conversation people skip

Get the terms agreed before the camera comes out. Not because anyone is being difficult, but because these things are genuinely awkward to negotiate afterwards, and unclear deals are where working relationships go to die.

Cover the money. Is this paid, trade, or split? If it is trade, what does each side get.

Cover usage. Where can each of you post the images, for how long, and can either of you sell them. Adult work makes this sharper than normal photography because the images have direct commercial value on multiple platforms.

Cover deliverables. How many edited images, in what timeframe, and what happens to the unedited files.

Cover consent properly. What is being shot, what is not, and who else will be in the room.

Put it in writing. A message thread counts. A vague verbal agreement in a studio at 6pm does not.

Working across borders

If you are hiring in a city you are travelling to, add two things.

Confirm they shoot adult content in that country. Local rules vary more than people expect, and a photographer who works with a studio will know what is and is not allowed on those premises.

And do a call first, even a short one. You are about to be undressed in a room with a stranger. Ten minutes on video beforehand is not paranoia, it is basic scheduling.
